The Story of Ruths Hotel
The Story of Ruths Hotel goes back more than a century ago when Emma og Hans Chr. Ruth started as hosts on a beach guesthouse called "Badepensionatet Vesterhus".
In 1904 Hans Chr. Ruth main duty was supervising at the rescue service in Gl. Skagen and Emma was employed at Jeckel Beachhotel. However Emma and Mrs. Jeckel had controversy when Emmas mother passed away and after the disagreement Emma was no longer interested in working for Mrs. Jeckel. The Ruth Family therefore decided to open up for summer guests, in the beginning just in form as a guesthouse, later it became a hotel and changed the name to Ruths Hotel.
Hans Chr. Ruth was in 1909 involved in a large scale rescue mission of the coast at Gl. Skagen. The Norwegian ship "Speed" from Sandefjord wrecked and the only survivor is a gentleman named Johan Oluf Dahler. Mr. Dahler was brought to Ruths Hotel and then he was nursed and cared for by the daughter of the house - Dagmar and it didn't take long before a sweet romance began.
However Dagmar was at the time only 16 years old, Which resulted in that Johan Olaf returned to the sea for a couple of years before he returned to Gl. Skagen and his beloved Dagmar and then they got married in 1912. Johan Oluf starts working with Hans Chr. at the rescue station. In addition he was helping with various assignments at Ruths Hotel, which had undergone several expansions over the years.
In 1917 Dagmar and Johan Olaf got the opportunity of becoming hotelowners for themselves as they bought Strandhotellet, which Mrs Marie Schmidt Kristensen had build and founded all by herself seven years ealier. Later they took over the daily running of Ruths Hotel aswell and the two hotels became one. In more than 60 years Johan Olaf and "Mama Dahler", as she was known by family and friends, enjoyed a central role in the idyllic landscape of Gl. Skagen.
When Mama Dahler died in 1974 the ownership of the two hotels is split and over the years they have had several different owners. Thanks to Jørgen Phillip- Sørensen (JPS) the two hotels is once again as one unit. The historic Strandhotellet Gl. Skagen has now changed its name to Ruths Strandhotel, where the romantic and cosy suites and the café still provides the atmosphere for a romantic stay.
